State of Leadership in Atlanta and Georgia: In the past several years, there has been tremendous turnover in the city’s business and civic sectors. Maria will break it all down and will analyze where we have been, where we are going and how we can make sure Atlanta and Georgia can be as successful as they can be.

Maria Saporta

 

  Maria Saporta is a longtime Atlanta business and civic journalist. 

She also is the founder of her own website: www.SaportaReport.com, which provides daily updates on local business, urban and civic issues focusing on metro Atlanta, Georgia and beyond. 

    She also has been working to launch the Atlanta Civic Circle, a nonprofit journalism entity focusing on key community issues by providing civic literacy and civic engagement.

   From September 2008 to March 2020, Maria wrote a weekly column and news stories for the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

     Maria also was a weekly contributor to WABE/90.1 FM from the fall of 2014 to 2017. She also has been a freelance writer for several other publications, including Atlanta Magazine among others.

    Until the end of August 2008, Maria had spent 27 years with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She was its business and civic columnist for more than 17 years - from January 1991 to August 2008.

     Maria is an Atlanta native who began her full-time journalistic career in April 1980 with the Macon Telegraph. 

     She received her Masters’ degree in urban studies from Georgia State University in 1980. And she also holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from Boston University.

     Maria also is a past president of the Atlanta Press Club, continues to serve on its Executive Committee, the Hall of Fame Committee and chairs its "Loudermilk-Young Debate Series" Committee. She also serves on the board’s executive committee of the Alliance Francaise d’Atlanta, a French cultural organization and school that was founded by her mother in 1963.

    In January 2019, Maria was inducted into Georgia Trend’s Hall of Fame. She also was inducted into the Georgia State University Business Hall of Fame in 2012.  She also received the Atlanta Business League 2013 CEO Award for Vision of Excellence. Maria was inducted in the 2002 YWCA Academy of Women Achievers. 

    SaportaReport also received the 2017 award for Outstanding Public Outreach and Journalism from the Georgia Chapter of the American Planning Association. Most recently, Maria was given the inaugural “Atlanta Hero” award by the Rotary Club of Atlanta on July 9, 2018.     

    Maria is an Atlanta native and the daughter of European parents, who were active citizens of Atlanta. She also is the mother of two adult children.
